HUNGARIAN HELP IN AFRICAN ORPHANAGES

Featured News // 2016.03.04

‘An important element of the American and European cuisine is the tap’ – this is how African children are digging the curriculum. Róbert Richárd Kiss, the presenter of InfoRádio’s Világszám, talked about the black continent’s orphanages and their supporting programmes.

Globoport.hu writes about how the situation of African kids is very much different from the situation of Western kids. While our mothers can still do the laundry for us when we are adults, in Africa 5-year-olds can already work and children can be expelled from school at the age of 12. African orphans grow up between particularly poor conditions.

“It might be hard to imagine but some orphanages actually get Hungarian help. For instance, St. Kizito orphanage in Uganda where children are looked after until the age of 3. After that, they get into different families” said the director of the institution.

There is an orphanage like this in Malawi too and it also functions as a school. Róbert Richárd Kiss visited a class there where children learn about the European cuisine. This institution, which looks after about 400 children, is helped by Csaba Szeremley, the co-worker of the local HTCC (Hungarian Trade and Cultural Center).

Dóra Patay, representing the African-Hungarian Union, talked about different programmes supporting children. AHU launches different projects to help orphan, handicapped children since 2010. As part of their newest programme, children can be symbolically adopted at the St. Kizito orphanage and taken care of by 4000 Ft-s/month. More details here.
